What to Do When a Dental Crown Falls Off at Night or on a Weekend

Friday Night, Crown Off: Don't Panic
It's one of the most common scenarios we hear: it's Friday evening, dinner is on the table, and suddenly there's something hard in your mouth — your dental crown has come off. Or you wake up Saturday morning and notice that the crown you've had for years is missing. The regular dentist's office is closed. What do you do?
The answer is straightforward: call American Urgent Dental. We're open when other offices aren't, because we know dental problems don't respect weekday business hours.
First Minutes: Immediate Steps When Your Crown Falls Off
DON'T SWALLOW IT: If you feel something unusual, spit it out immediately. If you accidentally swallowed the crown, it typically passes through the digestive system without issue — but let us know when you call.
FIND AND SAVE THE CROWN: Retrieve it, rinse gently under cool water, and keep it safe in a small container or zip-lock bag. If intact, the crown can often be re-cemented same day.
ASSESS THE TOOTH UNDERNEATH: Look at the tooth that was under the crown. A prepared "stub" of tooth is normal. Visible decay (dark or soft areas), a broken tooth, or an exposed nerve-sensitive area changes the urgency level — call us right away.
Weekend and After-Hours Temporary Measures
TEMPORARY DENTAL CEMENT: Pharmacy brands like Dentemp, Recapit, and TempBond are specifically designed for temporarily recementing crowns at home:
1. Clean the crown and tooth thoroughly inside and out
2. Dry both as well as possible
3. Place a small amount of cement inside the crown (not too much)
4. Press firmly onto the tooth, biting gently to seat it correctly
5. Remove any excess cement that squeezes out
6. Do not eat for at least 30 minutes
Do not eat on the crown side. Avoid sticky foods. Call us as soon as possible for permanent recementation.
DO NOT USE SUPER GLUE — ever. Toxic in the mouth, prevents professional repair, often causes misalignment trapping bacteria.
Managing Sensitivity While You Wait
The tooth stub exposed when a crown comes off is dentin — sensitive to cold air, cold beverages, sweet foods, and biting pressure. Ibuprofen helps with aching. Keeping the crown temporarily recemented dramatically reduces sensitivity.
If the tooth is spontaneously throbbing or severely painful in ways OTC measures cannot manage — call us immediately. This suggests the pulp may be exposed or affected, which is more urgent than a simple crown dislodgement.
What Happens When You Come In
- X-ray and examination: We evaluate the tooth underneath, check for decay, assess the fit of the crown, and evaluate the bite.
- Treatment scenarios:
- Crown intact, tooth intact, no decay → Same-day recementation. Often completed in under 30 minutes.
- Decay present → Remove decay, rebuild foundation, then recement or new crown.
- Crown damaged or no longer fits → New crown fabricated; temporary crown placed same day.
- Tooth fractured underneath → Assessment and options depending on extent.
